Lahore Air Turns Hazardous Again as AQI Crosses 530 and Punjab Cities Choke

Lahore woke up to air you could feel in your throat on Monday. The city's air quality index crossed 530, putting it in the hazardous range, and it was not alone. Five Punjab cities sat among the six most polluted places in the country.
Dawn reported that IQAir recorded an AQI of 535 in Lahore at 8am, with fine particle pollution, known as PM2.5, at 343 micrograms per cubic metre. These are tiny particles, small enough to get deep into the lungs and into the blood. That is why doctors take readings like this so seriously, especially for children, older people and anyone with asthma or heart trouble.
The picture across Punjab was worse in places. In IQAir's live ranking of Pakistani cities on Monday morning, Gujranwala topped the list at 606, followed by Lahore at 509 in that snapshot, then Faisalabad and Multan at 310 each, and Sialkot at 260. Peshawar came sixth at 216. Later hourly updates pushed Gujranwala to 675 and Lahore to 535, which shows how fast the numbers move through the day.
Samaa's report put Lahore's overall reading above 530 too, and said some neighbourhoods were far worse. It listed Iqbal Town at 836, Samanabad at 828 and Barki Road at 798. The Nation, using Meteorological Department figures, put Iqbal Town even higher at 912, followed by Burki Road at 698, Gulberg at 619 and DHA Phase 5 at 569. The exact neighbourhood numbers differ between monitors, because they measure at different spots and times, but every source agrees on the same story: the air in Lahore today is dangerous to breathe.
So why is it this bad, right now? Dawn pointed to a sharp rise in farm fires across Punjab, with extensive burning in the rice growing belt around Lahore. The Pakistan Air Quality Initiative, in a forecast issued on 1 November, expected PM2.5 to climb to 149 micrograms per cubic metre by Wednesday 4 November, about 49 percent above October's average. That forecast already looks low against Monday morning's readings.
There is a longer argument running behind today's numbers as well. The same initiative has questioned government claims that Lahore had its cleanest October in five years. Its own figures show average PM2.5 in October 2026 fell 27 percent on last year across 26 monitoring sites, but Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb had shared data with Dawn showing Lahore's average US AQI for PM2.5 at 180.5 in October 2026, down from 204.6 in 2025 and 213 in 2024. Either way, October's improvement has not held into November.
What should people do today? Health experts quoted in the reports gave the same simple advice: stay indoors if you can, keep windows and doors shut, and wear a mask if you have to go out. The Punjab Health Department gave the same advice, and the Met Department forecast dry weather with no rain in the next 24 hours, so there is no washout coming to clear the air. For a city already dealing with health pressures, from Pakistan reporting its seventh polio case of 2026 in Karachi to the everyday strain on hospitals, a smog day like this is one more burden families did not need, even as the country also marked a brighter moment in Pakistan taking over the G-24 chairmanship and PIA adding its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
