Tom Izzo Praises Big Ten’s Dominance: “We’re Flexing Our Muscles” with Record 6 Teams in Sweet 16

Michigan State legend Tom Izzo is beaming with pride after the Spartans punched their ticket to the Sweet 16 in the 2026 NCAA Tournament, and he’s not the only one celebrating.

The Big Ten Conference has gone on an absolute tear this March Madness, landing a whopping six teams in the Sweet 16: Michigan State, Michigan, Illinois, Nebraska, Iowa, and Purdue. That’s just one shy of the all-time record set by the SEC last year, and Izzo says it shows the conference is seriously flexing its muscles.

“I think it speaks volumes for our league,” Izzo said. “I’d say the Big Ten is flexing its muscles in that respect, and I’m a Big Ten fan for all the teams that are playing right now.”

This kind of success isn’t limited to men’s basketball either. Izzo pointed out the conference’s strong showing across football, women’s basketball, and hockey this year. It’s a banner season for the Big Ten overall.

For the Spartans, this marks their 17th Sweet 16 appearance under Izzo’s leadership. They’ll now face a tough matchup against defending champions UConn in the East Regional semifinals on Friday in Washington, D.C.

It’s been a long wait for another national title from the Big Ten (the last one came from Michigan State way back in 2000), but with so many teams still alive, fans are daring to dream again.

What do you think, is this the year the Big Ten finally breaks through and brings home the championship? Are you rooting for Michigan State or another Big Ten squad? Drop your predictions and thoughts in the comments!
