Harry Kane is staying at Bayern Munich. The England captain signed a two-year contract extension on Thursday that keeps him at the German champions until June 30, 2029, just a week after he lifted the Ballon d'Or.

Bayern announced the deal on Thursday morning, ending months of talk about the 33-year-old's future. His old contract was running into its final year, which meant he could have walked away for nothing next summer. Instead he has committed the best years of what is left of his career to Munich, Reuters reported.

"I feel right at home at FC Bayern," Kane said in the club's announcement. "I love the club, the fans and the city of Munich. We have a fantastic team and, in Vincent Kompany, a fantastic manager. My whole family is very happy here. I was keen to stay. I'm now looking forward to the future and I want to win many more titles with this great club."

The numbers explain why Bayern were so keen to get it done. Kane has scored 156 goals in 161 appearances in all competitions since joining from Tottenham Hotspur in 2023, and he has won two Bundesliga titles, the German Cup and two German Super Cups along the way. He has finished as the Bundesliga's top scorer in each of his first three seasons in Germany, something no player has done before.

Last week he became the first Bundesliga player in 30 years to win the Ballon d'Or, and the first Englishman to take the award since Michael Owen in 2001. He has also won the European Golden Shoe twice, and this summer he captained England to third place at the World Cup, scoring six goals in the tournament. This season he already has 10 goals and eight assists in 14 appearances, including his 100th Bundesliga goal in the 7-0 win over Union Berlin in September.

German media reported that the new deal is the most lucrative contract in Bayern's history, though the club did not disclose the figures. The Times reported that Kane will keep roughly the same salary he has had since 2023, about 400,000 pounds a week. Talks had been going on since August, with the length of the deal the main sticking point. Kane wanted a deal running to 2030, the year of the next World Cup, while Bayern held firm at 2029.

Bayern chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen was delighted to get it over the line. "His contract extension is a commitment to FC Bayern and to a story that is far from over," he said. Board member for sport Max Eberl added that the deal gives the club certainty in its planning and sends a message that the biggest goals are within reach at Bayern.

For Kane, the decision also closes the door on a return to England for now. He sits 47 goals short of Alan Shearer's Premier League record of 260, and he has been linked with a move home ever since he left Tottenham. In August he said the Premier League no longer held the same appeal for him, and this deal backs that up. The record will have to wait.

It has been quite a week in European football. Como smashed Lens 9-1 to equal a Champions League record, and Arsenal and Manchester City both won away in the Champions League. Kane's signature is the biggest piece of business of them all, and Bayern's rivals will have noticed.
