A National Database and Registration Authority officer was shot dead outside his office in Peshawar on Friday morning. Fahad Khan, an assistant director at Nadra, was on his way to work when unidentified gunmen opened fire near the office in Hayatabad. Police found eight spent bullet casings at the scene and have started an investigation, but no one has been arrested yet.

The shooting took place in the parking area behind the Nadra office in Hayatabad Phase 5, within the limits of Hayatabad police station. Police spokesperson Alam Khan said Fahad was heading towards the building when the attackers opened fire and fled. His body was taken to hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Fahad was the nephew of MNA Noor Alam Khan and the son of Sharoom Khan, a resident of Kafur Dheri. Noor Alam Khan wrote on X that his nephew had been shot by terrorists, though police have not yet said who was behind the attack or why it happened.

Police have not named a motive yet. Early reports spoke of a personal dispute, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi told reporters there were land disputes under way and investigators were looking into whether that was behind the killing. Kundi called the murder absolutely condemnable and unacceptable, and said he had told the Peshawar police chief to make sure the investigation was swift and complete, with no delay or leniency. National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq also expressed sorrow and said those involved should be arrested and brought to justice as soon as possible.

What this means for people in Peshawar is plain: even a government officer walking into his own office is not safe. The killing is the latest in a run of violent incidents in the province. Security forces foiled an infiltration bid by militants in Kurram this week, and Afghan posts were hit in return fire. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has seen a sharp rise in violence over the past year. Figures from the Centre for Research and Security Studies show deaths from violence in the province rose from 1,620 in 2024 to 2,331 in 2025.

It has been a grim day for the province on other fronts too. Eight people were killed when a bus hit a dumper on the Hazara Motorway. Pakistan has been in the headlines for very different reasons at the United Nations this week, where it led a call for diplomacy during wars, but at home the pressure is on the police to show they can protect government staff and catch killers fast.

Police say they are checking CCTV cameras from the area and carrying out raids, and the killers are expected to be traced in the coming days.
