Lamine Yamal made Champions League history and Raphinha scored twice as Barcelona beat Aston Villa 3-0 at a rainy Camp Nou on Tuesday night. The win ended Villa's perfect start in Europe and lifted Barcelona to nine points from four games, right in the race for a top eight finish.
It took only seven minutes for the night to turn. Aston Villa tried to play out from the back, a loose pass inside their own box fell to Yamal, and the 19 year old curled the ball into the far corner. FC Barcelona reported that the goal made Yamal the highest scoring player under the age of 20 in Champions League history, with 14 goals, one more than the old teenage record held by Kylian Mbappe.
Villa did not fold after that early blow. Unai Emery's side had won all three of their European games before this trip, and they threatened on the break more than once. Joan Garcia made a string of big saves for Barcelona, Pedri cleared one effort off the line, and Matty Cash had a fierce drive deflected just wide. At half time, though, the home side still led, and the rain kept falling on a night that had started in sadness.
The usual Champions League anthem was not played before kick off, as a mark of respect for Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel, who died on Tuesday morning after an on pitch collision in a Spanish second division match the day before. The blog reported his death at the age of 30 earlier in the day, and Raphinha said after the game that he did not want to talk about football, only to send a message of strength to the player's family.
Barcelona took control after the break. Fermin Lopez fed Raphinha in the 52nd minute and the Brazilian's shot took a deflection off Pau Torres that wrong footed goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Twelve minutes later, Joao Cancelo skipped past John McGinn and picked out Raphinha with a lovely outside of the boot cross, and Raphinha finished from close range for his second of the night.
The numbers behind the win tell their own story:
- Yamal: 14 Champions League goals, a new teenage record, passing Mbappe's 13
- Raphinha: 19 goals in all competitions this season, and now level with Ronaldinho on 94 goals for Barcelona
- Barcelona: nine points from four games, second in the league phase table at full time
- Aston Villa: first defeat in Europe this season after three straight wins
- Barcelona's first Champions League clean sheet in 19 games
For Pakistani football fans, nights like this are why the Champions League still pulls a crowd at odd hours. It is also a reminder of how far the game has grown at home, from Pakistan's historic first FIFA youth World Cup squad to nights spent following Europe's biggest clubs. Barcelona bounced back from defeat to Paris Saint Germain in their last European outing, Al Jazeera reported, and they now sit in a strong spot with four games left in the league phase. Villa, meanwhile, drop to third, still well placed but no longer unbeaten, and Emery's poor record at Camp Nou goes on.
It was a win built on youth and nerve. Yamal, still a teenager, set the tone with a record breaking goal, Garcia kept Villa out when the game was still alive, and Raphinha finished the job in the second half. Nights in the rain at Camp Nou have a habit of producing these stories, and this one will stay with Barcelona fans for a while, even as the sadness around the Tenerife tragedy hangs over Spanish football. For a club chasing a top eight finish, three points like these are worth more than the scoreline suggests, just as every big result matters in a long season, whether it is in Europe or in a home series win that lifts a whole country.
