Asia's biggest football tournament will not start in January after all. The Asian Football Confederation has moved the Asian Cup 2027 in Saudi Arabia back by almost a year, to 23 December 2027, because attacks on the host country have made travel and planning too uncertain. The final will now be played on 21 January 2028.

Al Jazeera reported that the AFC confirmed the new dates on Tuesday after long talks with Saudi officials and the local organising committee. The tournament was due to start in Riyadh on 7 January 2027 and run to 5 February.

That plan is gone now. The 24 team competition will still be held in Saudi Arabia, in Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar, but in a very different window. Saudi Arabia keeps the hosting rights, and the event keeps the name Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 even though it will finish in 2028.

The reason is plain. Yemen's Houthis have repeatedly attacked Saudi targets since September, including airports. Channel NewsAsia, citing Reuters, noted that a strike on Riyadh's international airport last month killed at least 12 people and wounded more than 300. It was the deadliest attack in Saudi Arabia in more than a decade.

The AFC said its organising committee approved the move because of exceptional circumstances in the region, including what it called substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions. In plain words, teams, officials and fans could not be sure they could get in and out safely on the old dates.

This was not a sudden panic. Questions about the tournament had been building for weeks, with several countries raising security worries. Five Saudi Pro League games have already been pushed back, and other events in the kingdom have been cancelled or moved, including golf's Saudi International and a cycling world championship event.

The new dates at a glance:

  • Old dates: 7 January to 5 February 2027
  • New dates: 23 December 2027 to 21 January 2028
  • Host cities: Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar
  • Teams: 24, with Saudi Arabia in Group A
  • Next step: the AFC will put the new dates to FIFA for approval

For fans, the shift changes the whole shape of the tournament. A January event in the Gulf winter becomes a festive season tournament running over Christmas and New Year. For players, it means almost a year more of waiting, and for Saudi Arabia it means its first time hosting the Asian Cup will come with even more eyes on it, as the country also prepares to host the World Cup in 2034.

The wider region is tense in ways that keep spilling into sport. Just this week, explosions were reported on Iran's Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, and diplomacy is still trying to catch up with the fighting, as seen in China's latest Middle East meetings. The Asian Cup decision shows how that tension now reaches far beyond politics, right into the fixture list.

It is also a reminder of how crowded the sporting calendar has become. Glenn Maxwell's retirement from international cricket closed one chapter this week, and now Asian football has had to rewrite one of its biggest dates.
