Russia Strikes Kyiv South Bridge in Overnight Attacks as Zelenskyy Warns of Serious Escalation

Russia struck Kyiv's South Bridge in overnight attacks that included 16 ballistic missiles and more than 280 drones, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday, calling it a serious escalation against Ukraine's logistics. Kyiv now plans to spend 1 billion hryvnias, about 22 million dollars, on new water crossings over the Dnipro river so people can still cross if bridges are hit again.
Main News Report
The South Bridge is one of six main road bridges over the Dnipro, the wide river that cuts Kyiv in two. Zelenskyy said there were casualties and hits in the capital, including on the South Bridge, Al Arabiya reported, citing Reuters. He called it "a serious escalation in Russia's operation against our logistics".
The strikes did not stop at Kyiv. Zelenskyy listed strikes on the Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Odesa, Chernihiv, Sumy, Donetsk, Kherson and Chernivtsi regions. In most places, he said, the targets were energy sites, logistics and ordinary city infrastructure.
At a university campus in Kyiv, the number of people hurt rose to 12, five of them students and staff, after a first strike was followed by a second ballistic missile attack while rescue crews were still at work. Police in Kyiv said a woman was killed and at least 14 more people were hurt in the capital overnight, with damage recorded in six districts.
Russia's Defence Ministry said its forces hit transport infrastructure in Kyiv, a logistics hub in the Kharkiv region, industrial sites and cargo vessels it said were serving military purposes. Al Jazeera reported that Russian attacks also caused deaths and injuries in Kharkiv and Pavlohrad.
Elsewhere, officials in the Russian-held part of Zaporizhzhia said a drone strike on a bus killed one person and hurt 30 others. In the Russian city of Bryansk, near the border, a drone attack killed one person and wounded six others.
Background Context
Russia has stepped up strikes on logistics in and around Kyiv in recent months. In October it hit bridges in the city, disrupting travel for hundreds of thousands of people who live on one side of the Dnipro and work on the other. Reuters reported that Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, told the city's defence council about the plan for combined water crossings and the access roads leading to them.
Water crossings can take many forms, including pontoons, fords and other low structures that let vehicles cross a river. Klitschko gave no further detail on the design, but the point is plain: if bridges are a target, the city needs another way across.
The timing matters because talks are close. On Friday, Kyiv and Moscow said they had agreed to hold United States-mediated technical meetings in Abu Dhabi in early November. A local ceasefire in the southern Kherson region also took effect on Tuesday, to let aid reach the Russian-held town of Oleshky. The overnight strikes show that fighting elsewhere has not paused for those talks.
Reactions and Statements
Zelenskyy used the attacks to press for faster air defence help. He said delays in delivering Patriot and NASAMS interceptor missiles are directly helping Russia, and that every delay means another strike on another site. "Pressure on Russia and real support for Ukraine are needed for the situation to change," he said.
He also spoke after a rare diplomatic call. Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store called Russian President Vladimir Putin from Helsinki on Tuesday, and then spoke to Zelenskyy. The two leaders said they told Putin that real steps are needed to ease attacks on Ukraine's energy sites and infrastructure, and they talked about preparations for the November meetings.
Stubb said the war's outcome would directly affect the security of Finland and Norway, both of which border Russia, and of Europe more widely. "Ending the war requires direct discussions," he said. Most Western European leaders have avoided direct contact with Putin since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022, which is why this call stands out.
Klitschko, for his part, kept the focus on the city. He said the defence council had discussed the water crossings project, and the city will allocate 1 billion hryvnias for it. That is about 22 million dollars at current rates.
Why This News Matters
Bridges are not just concrete. In Kyiv they are the daily commute. Hundreds of thousands of people cross the Dnipro each day to get to work, school and hospitals. Knock out a bridge, or even threaten one, and the whole city slows down. That is why Zelenskyy calls this an attack on logistics, not just an attack on a building.
The scale of the night tells the same story. Here are the key figures in one place:
- 16 ballistic missiles fired overnight, plus more than 280 drones.
- 12 regions listed by Zelenskyy as hit, from Kyiv in the north to Odesa in the south.
- 6 main bridges cross the Dnipro in Kyiv, and the South Bridge is one of them.
- 1 billion hryvnias, about 22 million dollars, now set aside for new water crossings.
- 12 people hurt at a Kyiv university campus, five of them students and staff.
For readers in Pakistan, the link is less direct but still real. The war shapes world energy prices, shipping and food costs, and it shapes the diplomacy around the region. Pakistan has joined recent talks with Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Iran on stopping a wider Middle East war, as covered in our Tehran talks report. A war that drags on in Europe keeps pressure on the same world markets that set fuel prices at home.
Future Developments
The next date to watch is early November, when United States-mediated technical meetings are due in Abu Dhabi. Both sides said they agreed to those meetings on Friday. Whether the bridge strikes harden positions before they start is the open question.
Watch too for what Kyiv actually builds. If the water crossings go up fast, the city gains a backup route that makes future bridge strikes less damaging. If they stall, every new strike on a bridge will hit commuters harder.
Air defence deliveries are the third thread. Zelenskyy says delays in Patriot and NASAMS missiles cost lives each night. Any new announcement of deliveries, or any further delay, will show up quickly in the scale of the next overnight attack.
