Pakistan Security Forces Kill 8 India-Backed Terrorists in Balochistan IBOs: ISPR

QUETTA: Security forces have killed eight "India-sponsored" terrorists in three intelligence-based operations (IBOs) conducted across the Quetta, Nushki and Khuzdar districts of Balochistan, the military's media wing said on Sunday. A large quantity of explosives weighing 490 kilogrammes was also recovered, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

Main News Report

The IBOs were conducted on October 17 (Saturday) on the reported presence of terrorists belonging to the Indian proxy Fitna al-Hindustan, the ISPR said in its press release, as reported by Dawn, Geo News, The Express Tribune and SAMAA TV.

  • Quetta (Panjpai area): terrorists attempting to establish a roadblock to disrupt local traffic were intercepted by security forces, resulting in the killing of five "India-sponsored" terrorists.
  • Nushki: during a sanitisation operation, security forces busted a terrorist hideout and, after an intense fire exchange, two terrorists were killed. Weapons and ammunition were also recovered.
  • Khuzdar: a terrorist hideout was engaged through prompt offensive action, killing one terrorist. A large quantity of explosives — 490 kilogrammes — was recovered.
  • Ongoing operations: sanitisation operations were being conducted to eliminate any other terrorists found in the areas, according to the statement.

Background Context

The federal government officially designated all terrorist groups operating in Balochistan as Fitna al-Hindustan last year, accusing India of sponsoring a proxy war through the outfits, The Express Tribune reported. The state uses the designation to highlight India's role in terrorism and destabilisation across Pakistan, Dawn noted.

The operations are part of the "relentless counterterrorism campaign under Vision 'Azm-i-Istehkam'", as approved by the Federal Apex Committee on the National Action Plan, the ISPR said. Pakistan has witnessed a sharp rise in cross-border terrorist incidents, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021, Geo News reported. The country recorded its highest monthly number of militant attacks in 12 years during September 2026, according to Geo News.

The strikes come a day after armed men abducted 20 police recruits in Mastung district, Balochistan — an incident reported earlier today on PakInsight Hub — underscoring the province's volatile security situation.

Reactions and Statements

President Asif Ali Zardari, in a statement, paid tribute to the security forces for eliminating the eight terrorists, Dawn reported.

The ISPR reaffirmed that the "relentless counterterrorism campaign under Vision 'Azm-i-Istehkam' (as approved by the Federal Apex Committee on the National Action Plan) by security forces and law enforcement agencies of Pakistan will continue at full pace to wipe out the menace of foreign-sponsored and supported terrorism from the country".

Why This News Matters

  • A major plot foiled: the recovery of 490 kilogrammes of explosives in Khuzdar points to a significant planned attack that security forces intercepted in time.
  • Capital under watch: the foiled roadblock attempt in Quetta's Panjpai area shows militants attempting to disrupt daily life in the provincial capital itself.
  • Worst month in 12 years: the operations land against the backdrop of September 2026's record militant attacks, raising the stakes for the Azm-i-Istehkam campaign.
  • Border economy at stake: with Pakistan-Iran trade corridors already suspended over security concerns, stability in Balochistan carries direct economic consequences.

Future Developments

Sanitisation operations are continuing in Quetta, Nushki and Khuzdar to eliminate any remaining terrorists in the areas, the ISPR said. Further updates from the military's media wing are expected as the operations conclude, along with any additional statements from the federal government.

The Azm-i-Istehkam campaign is set to continue at full pace, and security officials will be watching whether the foiled operations deter further attempts by the Indian proxy network in the province.
