The Milwaukee Brewers are World Series champions for the first time. The small market club beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field, ending a 58 year wait and a dream season in style.

Young ace Jacob Misiorowski threw five and two thirds scoreless innings, rookie Cooper Pratt drove in two runs, and World Series Most Valuable Player William Contreras hit a run scoring double as Milwaukee closed out the series 4-1 in front of thousands of travelling Brewers fans.

The Associated Press, reported through theScore, said Pratt gave Milwaukee a 1-0 lead with a run scoring single in the second inning against Rays ace Drew Rasmussen. Pratt singled again in the fifth for his sixth straight hit, a World Series rookie record, and scored on David Hamilton's single. Contreras doubled home Christian Yelich in the sixth, and Pratt added a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

Misiorowski allowed just two hits before leaving with a right calf cramp, and he got a standing ovation from Brewers fans who had taken over the section behind Milwaukee's dugout for the last three games. Closer Trevor Megill pitched the last two innings, gave up a run scoring double to Chandler Simpson with two outs in the ninth, then retired Richie Palacios on a grounder to end it. He threw his arms in the air and was mobbed by teammates near the mound.

“It's the best feeling ever. All of our fans are here. I know the city's waited a long, long time for this,” captain Christian Yelich said. “We're so happy to bring it home to them.”

Manager Pat Murphy, 67, who survived a heart attack in 2020 and was the National League Manager of the Year in his first two full seasons in 2024 and 2025, said: “This group of guys right here, the 2026 team, will be remembered forever, and they deserve that because they were a team. They're not worried about their own stats. No one cares about that. They care about coming together and winning tonight.”

Background Context: 58 Years, One Heartbreak, and a Small Market Triumph

The Brewers began as the Seattle Pilots in 1969 and moved to Milwaukee the next year. This title came in the club's 58th season. Its only previous trip to the World Series, in 1982, ended in heartbreak when the team blew a 3-1 lead in Game 7 of the sixth inning and lost 6-3 to the St Louis Cardinals.

Milwaukee's only other major league championship was won in 1957 by the Braves, who moved to Atlanta for the 1966 season. So this is the first World Series title the city of Milwaukee has celebrated for a team of its own.

The 2026 Brewers were built on pitching, defence and small ball, not home runs. They scored a major league low 32.1 percent of their runs on homers this season, and Tampa Bay was second lowest at 34.4 percent. The teams hit just four home runs between them in the whole series, three by Milwaukee.

Milwaukee led the majors with 103 wins in the regular season, then went 11-2 in the playoffs, including seven comeback wins and a sweep of the mighty Dodgers in the National League Championship Series. They rebounded in Game 5 from a heartbreaking 4-3 extra innings loss in Game 4, when they were three outs from a sweep in the 12th inning before the bullpen finally faltered.

Reactions and Statements: Records Fall as the Drought Ends

USA Today reported that Contreras was named World Series Most Valuable Player after hitting .381 with four runs batted in. Seven months earlier he had won the World Baseball Classic with Venezuela, and he became the first World Series Most Valuable Player the Brewers have ever had. His RBI double in the sixth on Wednesday scored Yelich and made it 3-0.

Contreras also set a franchise record with 19 postseason hits, threw out four runners trying to steal in the first four games, and made the new automated ball strike challenge system into a weapon, winning about two thirds of his challenges in the postseason.

Pratt, 22, who made his major league debut in June, said: “This is one of the greatest moments of my life. Oh my gosh. It doesn't even feel real. It's surreal. It only took four months!” Jackson Chourio set a five game World Series record with 11 hits.

“Milwaukee has waited 44 years, and Milwaukee, you have your world championship!” Brewers owner Mark Attanasio said from the postgame stage on the field.

Rays manager Kevin Cash was generous in defeat: “They're banged up and hurting right now, but just grateful for the way they carried themselves all season long, winning a bunch of games. It's as close knit of a group as I've ever been around.” The Rays, who debuted in 1998, dropped to 0-3 in World Series after defeats in 2008 and 2020. They are one of four clubs that have never won one, along with Colorado, San Diego and Seattle.

Why This News Matters: The Smallest Market Wins It All

Here are the numbers that tell the story:

  • 58 seasons: how long the Brewers waited for a first World Series title.
  • 103 wins: Milwaukee's major league best regular season record.
  • 11-2: their postseason record, with seven comeback wins.
  • 6 straight hits: Cooper Pratt's World Series rookie record across Games 4 and 5.
  • 11 hits: Jackson Chourio's five game World Series record.
  • .381: William Contreras's batting average in the series, earning him Most Valuable Player.

In plain words, baseball's World Series is the final round of the North American major leagues, played as a best of seven contest. The Brewers are the smallest market team in the majors, and this was the first series since 1991 between two teams in the bottom half of payrolls. Their win is proof that smart scouting, a deep bullpen and team play can beat money, which is why fans far beyond Wisconsin, including many searching for the result in Pakistan this morning, are talking about it.

There is one cloud on the horizon. This might have been the last major league game for a while. Owners are pushing the players' union for a salary cap, and a management lockout is likely to start on 2 December and could threaten the 2027 season.

Future Developments: Parade, Awards and a Possible Lockout

Watch for three things. First, Milwaukee's victory parade, set for Friday, when the city finally gets to celebrate at home. Second, the postseason awards, where Misiorowski, who started and won Games 1 and 5 with a 0.84 earned run average in the series, is the favourite for the National League Cy Young Award as the league's best pitcher. Third, the labour talks: if the lockout begins on 2 December as expected, the 2027 season itself could be at risk.
