Five people were killed and 27 others injured when a passenger bus plunged into a drain in Hafizabad district of Punjab on Thursday, after the driver lost control of the vehicle, Rescue 1122 said.

The bus was travelling from Raiwind to Chiniot when it went off the road in the Fatehke area of Pindi Bhattian tehsil and fell into the drain near a flyover. Rescue officials said overspeeding caused the driver to lose control.

Main News Report: Hafizabad Bus Crash Kills 5, Injures 27

Dawn reported that Rescue 1122 teams reached the site soon after the crash and started a rescue operation. Five rescue vehicles took part. The injured were given first aid at the scene, and 20 of them were taken to hospital.

With help from the local administration, rescuers used a crane to lift the bus, and the bodies of five victims were recovered from beneath the vehicle. Rescue teams kept searching the wreckage because they feared more passengers could still be trapped underneath.

The Nation reported that 13 passengers were shifted to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Pindi Bhattian for further treatment. The exact identities of the dead and the condition of the injured were not immediately released.

One report said the bus was carrying people heading to a religious gathering. That detail has not been confirmed by Rescue 1122 or the police, so it is not treated as fact here.

Background Context: A Week of Deadly Road Crashes

This is the third deadly bus crash in Pakistan in about a week, and each one has the same warning signs: speed, a lost sense of control, and a vehicle leaving the road.

Last week, 12 passengers were killed and around two dozen injured when a minibus and a passenger coach collided head on near Zero Point in Uthal on the Quetta to Karachi Highway in Balochistan.

Two days before that crash, 10 people were killed and 44 injured when a passenger bus overturned after hitting a road divider in Rojhan tehsil of Rajanpur district on the Indus Highway.

Back in June 2026, seven people were hurt when a speeding passenger van plunged into a canal near Dharampura Chaubcha Phatak in Lahore. And in August 2022, at least seven people were killed and 24 injured when a bus fell into a pond near Solangi Kharl, on the outskirts of Jalalpur Bhattian in Hafizabad district itself. Rescue officials blamed speeding in that case too.

The pattern is hard to ignore. Punjab Traffic Police rules already require bus and truck drivers to keep to speed limits, keep their vehicles roadworthy and avoid overloading. The crashes keep happening anyway.

Reactions and Statements: Rescue Officials Point to Overspeeding

Rescue 1122 has been the main source of facts so far. Its officials said overspeeding caused the driver to lose control, and they gave the toll of five dead and 27 injured.

No statement from the bus company or the district administration had been reported by the time of writing. Police have not yet said whether a case has been registered or what action, if any, will follow against the driver or the operator.

Why This News Matters: What This Means for You

For anyone who travels between cities by bus in Punjab, this crash is a direct warning. The Raiwind to Chiniot route is an ordinary intercity run, the kind thousands of people take every week. The bus did not hit another vehicle. It simply went too fast, left the road and fell into a drain.

Here are the key figures in one place:

  • 5 dead: bodies recovered from beneath the bus after it was lifted by crane.
  • 27 injured: given first aid at the scene, with 20 taken to hospital.
  • 5 rescue vehicles: took part in the operation, with the search continuing for anyone still trapped.
  • 3 deadly crashes in about a week: Hafizabad (5 dead), Uthal (12 dead) and Rajanpur (10 dead), a total of 27 lives lost on the roads.

In plain words, overspeeding is not a small traffic offence. On these roads it is the difference between reaching home and not reaching home at all. Passengers cannot control the speed, but they can ask questions, and operators who push drivers to rush need to face the law.

Future Developments: What to Watch Next

Watch for four things. First, whether the death toll rises, since some of the injured were in serious condition and rescuers feared more people could be trapped. Second, the police account of what happened, including whether the driver survived and what action follows. Third, whether the district administration orders any check on buses using the Pindi Bhattian route. Fourth, whether this crash, coming so soon after Uthal and Rajanpur, pushes the authorities to enforce speed limits on intercity buses more strictly.
