Farhan–Minhas Record Stand Rescues Pakistan as Hosts Post 168/8 in Rawalpindi T20I

Pakistan recovered from a middle-order collapse to post 168 for 8 against Sri Lanka in the third and final T20I at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Tuesday night, thanks to a record-breaking seventh-wicket partnership between captain Sahibzada Farhan and young all-rounder Arafat Minhas.

Main News Report

Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to field first, and the decision looked a good one early on. Pakistan raced to 34 inside three overs, but Eshan Malinga struck twice in quick succession, removing Fakhar Zaman for 12 and Maaz Sadaqat for a duck, to leave the hosts 57 for 2 at the end of the powerplay.

The middle overs belonged to Sri Lanka. Vijayakanth Viyaskanth dismissed Hasan Nawaz for 16, and Dasun Shanaka then tore through the middle order, removing Khawaja Nafay (3), Mohammad Imran (6) and Abdul Samad (15). When Samad fell, Pakistan were 102 for 6 and in real danger of being bowled out well short of a competitive total.

Farhan, who held one end together throughout, found the partner he needed in Arafat Minhas. The pair added 66 runs for the seventh wicket — Pakistan's highest seventh-wicket partnership in T20I cricket, beating the previous record of 50 shared by Faheem Ashraf and Shadab Khan. Their stand, followed by 53 runs in the last five overs, carried Pakistan to 168 for 8 and set Sri Lanka a target of 169.

Background Context

Pakistan came into the final match with the series already won. They chased down 183 to win the first T20I by four wickets on 9 October, then posted 215 for 3 in the second match on 11 October — built on Maaz Sadaqat's 96 and Farhan's 73 — to seal an 82-run victory and an unassailable 2-0 lead. The Rawalpindi match was therefore a dead rubber in series terms, but with a clean sweep on the line for the hosts and pride at stake for the visitors.

The series has also marked Farhan's first time captaining Pakistan on home soil, and the opener has led from the front throughout, following his 89 in the first match and 73 in the second with another captain's innings in the third.

Reactions and Statements

The defining passage of the innings was the Farhan–Minhas partnership. Coming together with Pakistan six down and the innings in trouble, the pair rebuilt first and attacked later, turning a likely total of around 130 into a challenging 168. For Sri Lanka, Shanaka's three-wicket spell in the middle overs was the highlight of a disciplined bowling effort that faded only in the final overs.

Why This News Matters

Beyond the result, the innings underlined the depth Pakistan are building in their T20 side. A record seventh-wicket stand, produced by a young player in Minhas alongside the captain, is exactly the kind of lower-order resilience Pakistan have often lacked in pressure situations. For Sri Lanka, the fightback with the ball after two heavy defeats showed character ahead of the longer formats still to come on this tour.

Future Developments

Sri Lanka's chase of 169 is now under way — the visitors were 15 for 1 early in their reply at the time of writing — and the result will decide whether Pakistan complete a 3-0 whitewash. The tour then continues with an ODI tri-series also involving England, followed by two Test matches starting on 9 and 17 November.
