Tragic Plane Crash in Colombia: Colombian Air Force C-130 with 125 People On Board Goes Down Shortly After Takeoff

Heartbreaking news from South America: A Colombian military transport plane carrying 125 people (mostly soldiers) has crashed just moments after taking off, resulting in multiple fatalities and dozens of injuries.

The incident happened on March 23, 2026, in the remote Amazon region of Putumayo near Puerto Leguízamo, close to the borders with Peru and Ecuador. The aircraft, a Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules, was transporting army personnel and a few police officers when it went down during its initial climb.

According to official reports:

  • At least 34 to 66 people have been confirmed dead (numbers are still being verified as rescue operations continue).
  • Over 70–80 survivors have been rescued and rushed to nearby hospitals, many with serious injuries.
  • The plane reportedly broke apart on impact and caught fire, with some passengers managing to jump out before the worst happened.

Colombia's Defence Minister and Air Force Commander described it as a "tragic accident." Rescue teams are still working at the site, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause, possibly mechanical failure, weather, or other factors in the challenging jungle terrain.

This is one of the deadliest military aviation incidents in Colombia in recent years. Our thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives and the injured personnel.

The situation is still developing, with more details expected as authorities release updates.
