PSL 2026 Shocker: Matches to Be Played in Empty Stadiums Due to Pakistan's Oil & Fuel Crisis No Crowds, Only Lahore & Karachi!

Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026
that's got everyone talking. The tournament is still kicking off on schedule on March 26, 2026, but it's going to look very different this year.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has just announced that all matches will be played behind closed doors, meaning empty stadiums, no fans allowed in the stands. The grand opening ceremony in Lahore has also been cancelled. Instead of spreading the action across six cities as planned (Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, Peshawar, etc.), everything is now limited to just two venues: Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore (starting with the opener) and National Stadium in Karachi.

Why This Sudden Change? It's All Tied to the Oil Crisis

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi explained it clearly: Pakistan is facing a serious fuel shortage and skyrocketing oil prices because of the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran and the wider Middle East conflict (including threats to close the Strait of Hormuz). The government has already asked people to restrict unnecessary travel to save fuel.

Naqvi put it straight:

“We can’t ask people to restrict their movements and then have 30,000 people in stadiums every day. We decided that as long as this [oil] crisis is ongoing, we will not have crowds at matches. This was a difficult decision, but it needed to be made.”

He also apologised, especially to Peshawar, which was set to host PSL games for the first time this season: “There will be no crowds anyway, so there was no reason to go to those cities.”

The PCB consulted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif (the PCB patron) and all eight franchises before making the call. Good news for ticket holders: **full refunds** will be processed within 72 hours. Franchises will also get compensated for lost gate revenue.

What This Means for PSL Fans & the Tournament

  • No live crowd energy games will feel more like TV broadcasts only (but hopefully still exciting on screen!).
  • Later stages might allow fans if the crisis eases (Naqvi said it could end in 10-15 days or longer – fingers crossed).
  • Some foreign players have already pulled out for personal reasons (e.g., Aussies Jake Fraser-McGurk and Spencer Johnson, South African Ottneil Baartman, West Indies' Gudakesh Motie).
  • For us in Lahore, at least the opener is still at Gaddafi, but without the usual roar of the crowd.

This is tough for cricket lovers who live for the stadium vibe, chants, and that electric PSL atmosphere. But it's a responsible move amid the national energy crunch – shows cricket isn't isolated from bigger issues like global oil shocks and regional tensions.
