Pakistan Reaffirms Unwavering Support for Saudi Arabia Amid Regional Crisis
Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has assured Saudi Arabia of Pakistan’s complete and steadfast solidarity during the current regional turmoil, emphasising that Islamabad will always stand shoulder to shoulder with Riyadh in efforts to maintain peace and stability in the Middle East.
The assurance came during a high-level meeting on Sunday evening when Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud called on Prime Minister Sharif at the Prime Minister’s House. The discussions focused on close coordination between the two countries to address the ongoing conflict and its wider implications for the region.
Prime Minister Sharif warmly welcomed the Saudi delegation and conveyed his respects to King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He appreciated Saudi Arabia’s measured and restrained approach amid the crisis and reiterated Pakistan’s firm commitment to supporting the Kingdom.
High-Level Diplomatic Engagement
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, National Security Adviser Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik, and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Syed Tariq Fatemi. Prince Faisal was received upon arrival by Syed Tariq Fatemi.
During the cordial talks, Prime Minister Sharif briefed the Saudi Foreign Minister on Pakistan’s extensive diplomatic outreach in recent weeks. He highlighted Islamabad’s efforts to encourage de-escalation and facilitate dialogue between the United States and Iran. The Prime Minister also recalled his recent conversations with the Saudi Crown Prince, including their meeting in Jeddah on March 12.
Both sides agreed to maintain close coordination on regional issues and stressed the importance of unity among Muslim countries at this critical juncture. Prince Faisal thanked the Prime Minister for the warm reception and shared Saudi Arabia’s perspective on the evolving situation.
Background Context
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia share deep historical, religious, and economic ties. Saudi Arabia has long been a major supporter of Pakistan through economic assistance, oil supplies on deferred payment, and investments. In turn, Pakistan has consistently supported Saudi security interests and maintained strong defence cooperation with the Kingdom.
The current meeting takes place against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East following the escalation between the US, Israel, and Iran. The conflict has already disrupted energy supplies, raised oil prices, and created security challenges across the Gulf region. Pakistan, as a close friend of both Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states, has been actively involved in back-channel diplomacy to promote peace and prevent further escalation.
Pakistan has previously offered to host talks between the US and Iran in Islamabad and has engaged with multiple regional players, including Turkey and Egypt, to build consensus for de-escalation.
Why This News Matters
This high-level engagement underscores the strength and resilience of Pakistan-Saudi relations at a time of significant regional uncertainty. For Pakistan, maintaining close coordination with Saudi Arabia is strategically important for economic stability, energy security, and defence cooperation.
The meeting also reflects Pakistan’s growing role as a diplomatic bridge in the Muslim world. By actively supporting mediation efforts and promoting unity among Islamic countries, Islamabad is positioning itself as a responsible and constructive player during a volatile period.
For the wider region, continued coordination between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia could help create a united front in favour of de-escalation and dialogue. As the conflict between the US and Iran continues without a clear resolution, such diplomatic initiatives become increasingly vital to prevent further spillover and protect economic interests.
The outcome of these discussions may influence future regional responses to the crisis and could open avenues for broader multilateral efforts aimed at restoring stability in the Middle East.
PakInsight Hub will continue to monitor diplomatic developments between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia and their implications for regional peace and Pakistan’s foreign policy.
