Balen Shah: Former Rapper Set to Become Nepal’s Youngest Prime Minister in Historic Political Shift

Kathmandu, Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen, a former underground rapper turned independent politician, is scheduled to be sworn in as Nepal’s prime minister on Friday, marking a remarkable rise from the streets of Kathmandu to the country’s highest political office.

The 36-year-old leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) secured a landslide victory in the general elections held on March 5, 2026. His party’s strong performance has shattered Nepal’s long-established political elite, reflecting deep public frustration with traditional parties. Shah personally defeated former prime minister KP Sharma Oli in the Jhapa 5 constituency, further underscoring the scale of the political change.

From Rapper to Prime Minister

Born in 1990 in Naradevi, central Kathmandu, Balen grew up as the youngest son of an Ayurvedic doctor and a homemaker. He studied engineering in Kathmandu and later in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. His entry into public consciousness came in 2013 when he won a popular rap battle, quickly becoming a prominent voice in Nepal’s underground hip-hop scene.

Shah gained widespread fame through protest songs that sharply criticised corruption, social inequality, and the struggles of Nepali migrant workers. His track Balidan has amassed over 14 million views on YouTube, while Nepal Haseko became an unofficial anthem during last year’s youth-led protests. Just days before his swearing-in, he released a new optimistic song titled “Undivided Nepali, this time history is being made,” which quickly crossed two million views.

In 2022, running as an independent candidate, Shah won the mayoral election in Kathmandu. During his term, he focused on cleaning the capital, preserving cultural heritage, cracking down on illegal constructions, and fighting corruption moves that won him praise from many but also drew criticism for being heavy-handed, particularly towards street vendors.

He formally joined the four-year-old Rastriya Swatantra Party in January 2026 and led it to a stunning victory in the recent general elections.

Background of Political Upheaval

Nepal has experienced significant political turbulence in recent years. Last September, youth-led protests against corruption, unemployment, and a temporary social media ban turned violent, resulting in 77 deaths, many from police action. The unrest ultimately contributed to the collapse of the previous government.

Shah’s campaign avoided traditional media interviews, relying instead on social media to connect directly with young voters. He promised sweeping reforms, including anti-corruption measures, judicial overhaul, and the creation of 1.2 million new jobs. His straightforward style and criticism of the old political guard resonated strongly with a population tired of nepotism and inefficiency.

Why This Matters

Balen Shah’s impending swearing-in represents more than a change in leadership — it signals a generational shift in Nepali politics. For the first time in decades, a young, independent-minded outsider with no dynastic political background is taking charge of the country.

His success reflects growing public demand for accountability, transparency, and practical governance. Many Nepalis, especially the youth, see him as a symbol of hope for addressing deep-rooted issues such as mass unemployment, economic stagnation, and the challenges faced by millions of Nepali migrant workers abroad.

However, significant challenges lie ahead. The Rastriya Swatantra Party lacks extensive governing experience, and delivering on ambitious promises will test Shah’s leadership. Critics have raised concerns about his mayoral tenure, including allegations of heavy-handed actions against vendors and a controversial deleted social media post.

Human Rights Watch has expressed hope that Shah’s government will prioritise a rules-based order and address the findings of the investigation into last year’s protests.

As Balen Shah prepares to take the oath of office, Nepal stands at a pivotal moment. Whether this former rapper can translate his popularity and anti-establishment appeal into effective governance will shape the country’s future for years to come.
